Juan Pablo Viscardo y Guzmán

1748 – 1798

“The spark of liberty. The prophet whose pen ignited a continent. His written cry crossed oceans to awaken the conscience of Spanish America, breaking chains and sowing the seed of emancipation in the New World.”

He was a Jesuit and writer from Arequipa, considered one of the first ideologues of American independence. His most important work was the “Letter to the American Spaniards”, where he criticized Spanish rule and motivated American peoples to fight for their freedom. His thought influenced independence movements across Latin America.
