Mariscal Andrés Avelino Cáceres

1836 – 1923

“The indomitable condor. The unquenchable fire of resistance and legendary leader of the Zepita Battalion. His figure is the sanctuary of honor; the man who, riding across the Andes, saved the republic's dignity in its bleakest and coldest hours.”

He was a Peruvian military officer and politician recognized for his participation in the War of the Pacific. He led the Peruvian resistance against the Chilean army in the Breña Campaign, earning him the moniker “The Wizard of the Andes” (Brujo de los Andes). His fight helped defend the country during one of the most difficult moments in Peru's history. He also served as president of Peru on two occasions.
