He was one of the first Peruvian scientists with international recognition. He stood out as a geologist, chemist, and mineralogist, conducting important research on the natural resources of Peru.
He discovered the mineral “humboldtine” and promoted the scientific and mining development of the country during the early years of the Republic, also boosting institutions dedicated to scientific research and preservation.
